Jeangu Macrooy ([ ʒɑ̃nˈgy maˈkroːi ]; born November 6, 1993 in Paramaribo ) is a Surinamese singer and songwriter .

Career

Jeangu Macrooy was born in Paramaribo. With his brother Xillan Macrooy, he founded the duo Between Towers in 2011. After two years at the Paramaribo Conservatory , he decided in 2014 to continue his studies as a songwriter at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Enschede , the Netherlands . In the Netherlands he began working with the music producer Perquisite, whom Macrooy met during an audition at the ArtEZ Conservatory. He was officially signed to Perquisites label Unexpected Records in December 2015.

Publications

Macrooy's debut EP Brave Enough was released on April 7, 2016. His first single Gold was well received: he played the song on the talk show De Wereld Draait Door on April 19, 2016, and it was used in a commercial for the Game of Thrones series. In April 2016, Macrooy was named Serious Talent by radio station 3FM .

Macrooy's debut album High On You , for which he collaborated with Perquisite as on his EP, was released on Unexpected Records on April 14, 2017. The album entered the Dutch album charts. The single High On You from the album reached first place in the Surinamese Top 40.

On February 7th, 2019 Macrooy released his second album Horizon at Paradiso .

Macrooy played in 2016 as support for Selah Sue , Blaudzun , Remy van Kesteren and Bernhoft. He also took part in the Popronde, a Dutch pop music festival in various cities. In 2017 he toured the Netherlands on his first club tour, in the summer of the same year Macrooy played with his band at various festivals, including the Noorderslag Festival , the North Sea Jazz Festival , the Festival Mundial in Tilburg and the Lowlands Festival . He also performed in his homeland, Suriname.

Jeangu Macrooy also performs outside the Netherlands. He was the opening act for the German concerts of Curtis Harding and Ayọ , as well as Trombone Shorty (in Germany, Belgium and France). In the summer of 2019 he made his first own headlining tour through Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin, among others, and performed at the internationally renowned Reeperbahn Festival . Macrooy's Horizon theater tour of the Netherlands was supposed to start in spring 2020, but was canceled due to the corona pandemic .

On the talk show De Wereld Draait Door (DWDD)

After his first appearance on DWDD, Macrooy was a regular guest on the show. He paid tribute to Stevie Wonder , George Michael and The Blue Diamonds and sang the song The Times They Are A-Changin by Bob Dylan in a DWDD retrospective . In the 2018/2019 season, Macrooy, together with Ruben Hein, paid tribute to Paul Simon and Elton John , who both announced their farewell tour at the beginning of the year.

The Passion and film music

Macrooy played the role of the 2018 Judas in Pop - Passion Play The Passion , which is broadcast annually on Dutch television. His single Dance With Me is the theme song from Michiel van Erps' feature film Nobody in de stad .

Eurovision Song Contest

In 2020, the Dutch public broadcaster AVROTROS announced that Macrooy would represent the host country at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2020 in May with the title Grow . Since the Netherlands had won the ESC 2019 , he was automatically qualified for the final. On March 18, 2020, the competition had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , but on the same day AVROTROS announced that Macrooy would represent the Netherlands at the ESC 2021 .
