Trombone Shorty , real name Troy Andrews (born January 2, 1986 in New Orleans , Louisiana ), is an American rhythm and blues and jazz musician ( trombone , trumpet , vocals ).
biography
Troy Andrews' grandfather was a successful blues musician, while his older brother James started out as a jazz trumpeter. Troy already mastered the trombone at the age of five and also played the trumpet and drums. His nickname Trombone Shorty comes from his favorite instrument, the trombone, and taking part in parades in New Orleans in kindergarten . He attended the renowned New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts. His cousin Glen David Andrews is also a trombonist.
At the age of 16 he released his first album entitled Swingin 'Gate , which received critical acclaim. Further publications followed, including several live recordings of his appearances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival between 2004 and 2008. He also appeared at European jazz festivals and also made excursions into pop music. Among other things, he accompanied Lenny Kravitz on his world tour in 2005 and performed with U2 and Green Day .
His breakthrough followed in 2010 with his first release on the major sub-label Verve Records . The album Backatown came in at number 3 on the jazz charts in the USA and even made it into the German album charts. On the album, which consists almost exclusively of his own compositions, Trombone Shorty not only plays the trombone , but also numerous other instruments and can also be heard as a singer. Backatown was nominated for an award in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category at the 2011 Grammy Awards .
In November 2012, Trombone Shorty won the Down Beat magazine's annual reader survey for the first time in the "Best Trombonist" category. In 2016 he received a Heinz Award .
