It wasn't until 1985 that his persistence paid off. In the popular TV program Soundmixshow he landed at number 3 with his version of Don McLean's pop song Crying and achieved so much fame that he hit the ground running with his first single: With Love Is in Your Eyes , he landed in the top 5 of the Dutch charts, the second single Ticket to the Tropics was even a number 1 hit . The associated album achieved gold status .

In 1988 he took part in the Grand Prix Eurovision for the Netherlands and although he only achieved an average 9th place with his title Shangri-La , this performance helped him on the international music stage. The following year, his pop single No More Bolero’s was released in numerous countries in Western Europe, Asia and South America. With 6 weeks at number 1 it was his biggest solo success in the Netherlands and in Germany, where he had a top 5 hit, he stayed in the charts for over half a year. The album of the same name was also very successful, not only in its home country, where it was awarded platinum , but also on the Asian music market. With the follow-up single Love Is in Your Eyes , however, he was only able to build on the great success to a limited extent.

In the 1990s, despite regular releases, it became musically a little quieter for Gerard Joling. For this he also became an actor and presenter . After a few smaller film and television roles, including in Flodder - A family to smooch in Manhattan , he got his own karaoke show on RTL4. Further shows followed and in addition to some appearances on the theater stage, he was also successful in 1997 with the figure skating revue Holiday on Ice .

From 2004 Joling was again musically active and successful in the charts in the trio with René Froger and Gordon Heuckeroth as De Toppers . He also acted as a presenter of popular formats such as celebrity figure skating and the casting show So You Wannabe a Popstar? emerged.

At the beginning of 2007 he had another big solo hit with the song Maak me gek and it reached number 2 in the charts. The accompanying album was even his first number 1 album in the Dutch Top 100. The second song on the album was Blijf bij mij (Dit zijn voor mij de allermooiste uren) , known in 1988 in the version of the singer André Hazes , who died in 2004 had become. Old recordings of Hazes were mixed with those of Gerard Joling and a duet was produced posthumously . The song became a huge success and stayed at the top of the charts for weeks .
