history

Holiday on Ice was created as a small hotel show and was first performed on December 25, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio (USA). The show was there for a week during the Christmas holidays (the so-called "Holiday Season"), which gave Holiday on Ice its name. After portable refrigeration systems were developed, mobile ice shows became possible from the mid-1940s.

In 1945, Morris Chalfen acquired a majority stake in Holiday on Ice. The show quickly established itself in the USA, and a little later Holiday on Ice was also staged in Central and South America. From 1951 the show made guest appearances in numerous European countries, including Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain. The first show in Germany took place on December 10, 1951 in Frankfurt am Main.

In 1953, the single runner Sonja Henie became a guest star at Holiday on Ice. In 1958 Elvis Presley attended a show in Frankfurt during his stay with the US Army in Germany.

In 1959, Holiday on Ice was performed as the first western project in what was then the Soviet Union. In the following years the show could be seen in other Eastern European countries.

Skee Goodhart came to the show as an ice skater in 1951, but soon switched to management. In 1983 he took over from Morris Chalfen as managing director and remained in this position until his death in 1994.

In 1965, the world championship pair Marika Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler were signed .

In 1996 Europe's largest independent television producer, Dutch Endemol , acquired Holiday on Ice. When the Dutch musical, theater and film producer Joop van den founded the Stage Holding Company at the end of 1999, Stage Entertainment Germany since August 2005 , all former Endemol live entertainment productions were integrated into the new company - including Holiday on Ice. In summer 2016, the show was completely taken over by CTS Eventim.

More than 329 million people have seen the shows since 1943. Because of this, Holiday on Ice was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the most visited ice show in the world .

In 2013 they celebrated the 70th anniversary with the show "Platinum".

After the successful production of "Atlantis" in 2017/2018, it was announced that the ice show will celebrate its 75th anniversary next season. In September 2018, the title of the new show was announced. "Showtime" brings the 75-year success story of Holiday On Ice onto the ice with impressive special effects and elaborate props and at the same time gives a glimpse into the future of the ice show.

In May 2019 it was announced that Sarah Lombardi would be a guest star in the new production "Supernova - A Journey to the Stars".

The show

Holiday on Ice in Kiel's Ostseehalle (1967)

Since its inception, Holiday on Ice has developed from a classic ice revue to a modern show that combines classic figure skating with elements from theater, dance, opera, pop, magic, musicals and acrobatics. Every show has had a specific motto since 1988 and is given a suitable name. The names of previous shows, on the other hand, were only internal “working names” that were not communicated in advertising. The shows, each completely re-enacted from the choreography to the musical design, consist of two acts. Up to 300 individually designed costumes by a cast with up to 40 runners are shown. This is how completely new show concepts are created time and again. A wide variety of figures are presented in pair skating, single skating and synchronized figure skating. In the show "Magic & Illusions" (1992) a motorcycle stunt was brought onto the ice for the first time.

Internationally famous figure skaters were regularly part of the Holiday on Ice showcast. Well-known stars of the show included Marika Kilius & Hans-Jürgen Bäumler , Toller Cranston , Robin Cousins , Denise Biellmann , Claudia Leistner , Marina Kielmann , Rudi Cerne , Ondrej Nepela , Norbert Schramm , Tanja Szewczenko and Katarina Witt .

In addition to figure skaters, well-known personalities can be won over to Holiday on Ice. For example, in 2010 Phil Collins re-recorded his most successful songs for the show “Festival”. Sarah Connor composed two songs for the production "Speed" . In addition to Rudolph Moshammer , who designed an ice-blue diamond dress for Holiday on Ice in 2003, designer Harald Glööckler created six costumes for the ice show's 70th birthday in 2013.

Of the five revue divisions that used to exist side by side, which were denoted by colors and traveled all over the world with the exception of the USA, only two still exist today, whose tours take place in Germany, Austria and France. In the winter season, Holiday on Ice tours with these two shows in parallel through numerous cities and counts around half a million visitors.

Trivia

In 1948, when the show was to go on tour, a new, powerful and easy-to-transport pursuit spotlight was commissioned from a Toledo-based manufacturer of stage lights, which included the previous strong but bulky spotlights and those for their operation should replace necessary heavy power generators. This pursuer, which can be operated with normal mains voltage, later became very popular with stage experts and artists under the name Super Trouper . The Super Trouper gained additional fame in the early 1980s with a successful song by the Swedish pop group Abba .
