The 33rd Eurovision Song Contest took place on April 30, 1988 in the Simmonscourt Pavilion of the Royal Dublin Society in Dublin . It was moderated by Pat Kenny and Michelle Rocca. The winner was the French- Canadian and later superstar Celine Dion with Ne partez pas sans moi, who at that time was only known in the French-speaking world. The contribution was composed by Atilla Şereftuğ , a Swiss citizen of Turkish origin, and the text is penned by Nella Martinetti .

particularities

The interpreter of the winning title, Celine Dion (2008)

Celine Dion's victory was Switzerland's second and to date last victory in the competition. In addition, the song was currently the last winning entry in French, a language that had dominated the ESC until then.

The host broadcaster RTÉ made sure to modernize the event during the production of the show to appeal to a younger audience and hired Declan Lowney, the producer of numerous music videos and youth programs. He was also responsible for organizing the pause filler, during which the band Hothouse Flowers visited a total of eleven countries in the music video for Don't Go ; at the time it was the most expensive Irish music video ever made.

Two gigantic video walls replaced the previous scoreboard; On the one hand, the first computer-based scoring board in the history of the ESC was shown, and on the other, pictures of the performers from the Green Room were shown. The gigantic stage, designed under the direction of Michael Grogan and Paula Farrell, was the largest and most modern in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest to date. To compensate for the size of the stage with the limited dimensions of the hall, the space around the audience was intentionally darkened and wide-angle shots of the audience were dispensed with in order to make the hall appear larger than it actually was.

For Germany, the mother-and-daughter duo Maxi & Chris Garden took part with the title Lied für eine Freund , which came in 14th. Alongside Switzerland, Germany and the United Kingdom, Norway ( For vår jord by Karoline Krüger ) was a favorite among bookmakers.

Austria was the only country not to receive a point this year.

Attendees

  • participating countries
  • Countries that had participated in a previous ESC, but not in 1988
  • All the countries that started last year had confirmed their participation this year as well, but Cyprus had to withdraw at short notice as the title Thimame by Yiannis Dimitrou had already been published a few years earlier. Cyprus could not nominate any other entry because the registration deadline had already expired, so that the field of participants shrank to 21 nations. The following performers returned to the competition:
