The 24th Eurovision Song Contest took place on March 31, 1979 in the International Convention Center in Jerusalem , since Israel had won the 23rd competition last year with A-Ba-Ni-Bi by Izhar Cohen . Israel had to bring forward the introduction of color television especially for the music competition.

particularities

Co-interpreter of the winning title: Gali Atari

It won Israel again with the title Hallelujah , sung by " Gali Atari and Milk & Honey ". In Germany it became a hit, although it did not receive any points from the German jury. Under this rating system, it was the first time that the winning song received no points from Germany.

Germany took fourth place with the song Dschinghis Khan , composed by Ralph Siegel and written by Bernd Augener , sung by the group of the same name . Peter, Sue & Marc and Pfuri, Gorps & Kniri came in 10th place with Trödler and Co. for Switzerland. Christina Simon with the contribution Austria Today in Jerusalem had to share the last place with Belgium.

Attendees

  • participating countries
  • Countries that had participated in a previous ESC but not in 1979
  • Turkey had already announced the title Seviyorum (in German "I love") by Maria Rita Epik , but then, under pressure from various neighboring Arab countries, preferred to stay away from the competition held in Jerusalem. Therefore “only” 19 countries took part in the competition.

    Voting procedure

The voting procedure introduced in 1975 applied again this year. In each country there was an eleven-member jury, which initially determined the ten best songs internally. Then the individual juries awarded 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 points and 1 point to these ten best songs.
