The 4th Eurovision Young Musicians took place on May 31, 1988 at the Koncerthuset in Concertgebouw in Amsterdam . The organizer was NOS , which organized this competition for the first time.
The winner of the 1988 edition was the Austrian violinist Julian Rachlin . It was the first time that Austria could win the competition. On the other hand, the Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes came in second, while the Italian violinist Domenico Nordio came in third.
venue
NOS chose the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as the venue . It was the first time since the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest that the Netherlands had hosted a Eurovision event.
For the first time there were also commentator booths in the building, so that the television broadcasters could for the first time send commentators directly to the competition.
format
Each country sends a musician who is not older than 19 years to the competition. He then plays an instrument and presents a piece with it. The musician is supported by the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest . Since the number of participants would exceed the time frame for a final, there were two semi-finals beforehand. In the end, a professional jury decided only six countries that will appear in the final. The jury then also decides the first three places there. The following jurors sat on the jury in 1988:
- Roberto Benzi (chairman)
- Anette Faaborg (presenter 1986 )
- Elmar Weingarten
- Osmo Vänskä
- Pascal Rogé
- Herman Krebbers
- Marco Riaskoff
- Sören Hermansson
- William Pleeth
Moderation
The Dutch presenter Martine Bijl acted as moderator.
