Leif Ove Andsnes

Leif Ove Andsnes (born April 7, 1970 in Karmøy ) is a Norwegian pianist .

Life

After studying with Jiří Hlinka at the Bergen Music Conservatory , Leif Ove Andsnes made his debut in Oslo in 1987 . He has made solo appearances in Amsterdam , Bologna , London , Munich and Berlin, among others .

Andsnes was awarded the Norwegian Critics' Prize and the Dorothy Chandler Award in Los Angeles . At the Hindemith competition in Frankfurt he won first place. For his CD solo debut with Leoš Janáček's piano sonata 1.X.1905 he was awarded the German Record Prize. In 2012 he stepped in for Krystian Zimerman and achieved a great personal success with a Beethoven / Chopin program at a soloist concert at the Salzburg Festival in the Great Festival Hall .

After Andsnes had been Artistic Director of the Ojai Music Festival in California in 2012 , he founded a chamber music festival in Rosendal, Norway ( Rosendal Chamber Music Festival) in 2016 .

Andsnes received an honorary doctorate from the Juilliard School in New York in 2016 . In 2017 he was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Bergen . He lives in Bergen with his family .

Recordings (selection)

Andsnes has recorded works by Frédéric Chopin , Sergei Rachmaninow , Edvard Grieg , Leoš Janáček , Franz Liszt , Sergei Prokofjew and Ludwig van Beethoven , among others .

Together with the South African action artist Robin Rhode , Andsnes realized the multimedia project Pictures Reframed in November 2009 , which reinterprets Modest Mussorgski's pictures at an exhibition .

Andsnes sets himself apart from other pianists in that he refrains from extravagance, both externally and technically. He plays “calmly”, said Axel Brüggemann in the Welt am Sonntag , and that is exactly how he works beyond the piano.
