Robin Rhode (* 1976 in Cape Town ) is a South African street art - action artist who deals with happenings , photography and video art in combination with graphic set pieces.

Live and act

Robin Rhode was classified as Colored during the apartheid period . He lived for a long time in the Bosmont district of Johannesburg and studied art at the Witwatersrand Technikon until 1998 . In 2000 he completed a postgraduate program at the South Africa School of Film, Television and Dramatic Arts. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 2002.

Thematically, the artist deals with both socially critical and casual views of the youth scene and city life , in the narrower sense with the townships around Johannesburg , especially Soweto . In his actions he quotes stylistic features of graffiti , wall painting and street art. The work often has autobiographical references that reflect on Rhodes' own childhood and youth in a subculture that emerged from apartheid , violence and racism . In his performances, the artist first provides a scenario (a bicycle, a house, an implied skateboard, etc.), which he usually pre-sketched with charcoal on a wall or on the floor; Rhode adds space to this two-dimensional template as part of a sometimes humorous, sometimes serious story by adding props. Rhodes' fictional interactions with his drawings are documented on videos, which in turn are used in installations .

In November 2009, Rhode realized the multimedia project Pictures Reframed , a reinterpretation of Modest Mussorgski's Pictures at an Exhibition, together with the Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes . In November 2015 his design was Arnold Schoenberg 's opera expectation on the Times Square shown in New York in two performances - the first opera performance in this square.
