Expectation (op. 17) is a musical monodrama in one act by Arnold Schönberg . It is his first work that he composed for the stage. Marie Pappenheim wrote the libretto . Although Schönberg had already completed his composition on September 12, 1909, it was first performed around 15 years later, on June 6, 1924, at the New German Theater in Prague as part of the music festival of the International Society for New Music under the direction of Alexander von Zemlinsky instead.

action
It's night. The picture shows three paths in the moonlight, surrounded by tall, dense trees. We see a young woman wandering desperately through the forest in search of her lover. In doing so, she experiences all emotional sensations; Fear and hope correspond with each other in quick succession. When she hits a corpse with her foot, she is horrified to discover that it is her lover's.
music
The work is a representative of musical expressionism . The tonality has been dissolved, the traditional harmony suspended. In accordance with the subjective-psychological text, Schönberg composes a free-flowing music full of emotional extremes , which has not yet been regulated by a twelve-tone technique . The large orchestra is a relic of late romanticism.
