Jukka-Pekka Saraste (born April 22, 1956 in Heinola , Finland ) is a Finnish conductor .

Life

Saraste first studied violin and began his professional career as a violinist in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the class of teacher Jorma Panula , he trained as a conductor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and then changed his profession in the mid-1980s.

In 1983 he founded the Avanti! Together with Esa-Pekka Salonen . Chamber Orchestra , which is primarily dedicated to the interpretation of contemporary music. In 1987 he was appointed chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, which he chaired until 2002. At the same time he was music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 2002 . Saraste was principal guest conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 2002 to 2005 , and from 2006 to 2013 he held the chief position of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra .

Jukka-Pekka Saraste has conducted concerts with many well-known ensembles and orchestras: first and foremost are the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam , the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Orchester National de France , the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra London , the Filarmonica de la Scala in Milan and the Staatskapelle Dresden . Among his numerous recordings, the complete recordings of the symphonies by Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen deserve special mention.

Since 2008 Jukka-Pekka Saraste has been Artistic Director of the Sibelius Festival in Lahti . In 2000 he was awarded the Finnish State Prize for Music, the Sibelius Medal in Finland and the Sibelius Prize in Norway .

At the beginning of the 2010/2011 season he took up the position of chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne . His contract was extended from May 2012 to 2016. On April 28, 2015, the contract with the WDR was extended again until the 2018/2019 season.
