biography

Esa-Pekka Salonen studied horn, conducting and composition at the Sibelius Academy Helsinki and in Italy, a. a. with Franco Donatoni and Niccolò Castiglioni . He made his debut as a conductor in 1979 with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The beginning of his international career was marked by two events: his short-term substitution at a concert of the Philharmonia Orchestra London in 1983, which suddenly promoted him to the front row of internationally renowned conductors, and a year later his first appearance in America with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , which he conducted regularly until he took over the orchestra as Music Director in 1992.

From 1985 to 1994 Salonen was 1st Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra London. From 1985 to 1995 he was the chief conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1989 Salonen was artistic director of the Helsinki Biennale , 1995 and 1996 artistic director of the Helsinki Festival, 1999 Music Director of the Ojai Music Festival, 2000 artistic director of Avanti! Buzzer sounds . Since 1995 he has been Artistic Director of the Sibelius International Conducting Competition in Helsinki, which takes place every five years, and since 2003 Artistic Director of the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm.

As Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1992 to 2009), Salonen in Los Angeles succeeded great musicians in 1992. The highlights of his collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra include the residency at the Salzburg Festival with St. François d'Assise , the residency at the Théâtre du Châtelet as part of the Stravinsky Festival in Paris, and tours through Japan and among the most important Music festivals of Europe. In November and December 2001 and February 2002 he conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra in a joint project with the composer Magnus Lindberg in London, Paris and Brussels, in which Lindberg's music was the focus. Salonen made a decisive contribution to the Walt Disney Concert Hall project , conducted world premieres of contemporary works, founded the Esa-Pekka Salonen Commissions Fund and made the orchestra one of the most successful in the country during these 17 years. He is the orchestra's honorary conductor.

In September 2004 he conducted the Finnish premiere of Kaija Saariaho's opera L'amour de loin at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, in December of the year as a co-production with the Paris Opera Bastille conducted Salonen in Los Angeles a semi-staged production of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde in the Peter Sellars directed by. The stage design was done by the video artist Bill Viola , who achieved completely new effects using techniques he developed. This co-production brought the artists to Paris in April 2005; the entire opera was staged here, and Salonen conducted the opera's orchestra. In 2006 he conducted the world premiere of Saariaho's opera Adriana Mater at the Paris Opera .

Esa-Pekka Salonen has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London since the 2008/2009 season . In his tenth year he conducted Mahler's 3rd and 9th symphonies, a gala to mark the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence, the European premiere of Unsuk Chin's Le Chant des Enfants des Etoiles and Schönberg's Gurrelieder .

Esa-Pekka Salonen was resident artist at the Konzerthaus Dortmund from 2010 to 2013 and designed the Zeitinsel Festival in September 2010. From 2015 to 2018 he was composer in residence with the New York Philharmonic .

In December 2018, Salonen announced that he would end his tenure as head of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London in 2021. At the same time, it was announced that he was hired as chief conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from 2020.

In March 2003 Salonen signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon . The first CD, a recording of Salonen's own works and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, was released in March 2005, a DVD with Saariaho's L'amour de loin in September 2005. Salonen's first joint recording with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon was released in October 2006 (Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps - the first CD recorded in the Walt Disney Concert Hall ).

Salonen's extensive discography, just like the innovative design of his programs, reflects his intensive engagement with the music of the 20th century. From 1985 to 2003 he worked with Sony Classical. Many of his recordings have received international awards, including the following recordings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra: Lutoslawski's Symphony No. 3 (Grammy, Koussevitzky Award, Prix Cecilia and Gramophone Award for Best Contemporary Record), Bartók's three piano concertos with Yefim Bronfman (Grammy) and a recording with film music by Bernard Herrmann ( German Record Prize ). Further recordings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra include: a. Gustav Mahler's 3rd Symphony, Bruckner's 4th Symphony, works by the Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas , a CD with compositions by Bach in transcriptions by Stokowski, Elgar, Webern, Schoenberg and Mahler, as well as recordings with works by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho and a CD with Salonens Compositions like LA Variations and Mania . A recording from 2002 brings recordings of four works by Magnus Lindberg with the Philharmonia Orchestra to the audience for the first time. Salonen recorded other works by Lindberg for Finlandia Records with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Avanti! Chamber Orchestra on. The same label also released a CD with works by Hindemith, Zimmermann, Lindberg and the Finnish composer Aarre Merikanto, for which Salonen conducted the London Sinfonietta. One of Esa-Pekka Salonen's 2002 releases on Nonesuch, which he recorded with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, is dedicated to John Adams' Naive and Sentimental Music .
