Niccolò Castiglioni (born July 17, 1932 in Milan ; † September 7, 1996 there ) was an Italian composer .

Life

Castiglioni studied piano and composition at the Conservatorio "Giuseppe Verdi" with Giorgio Federico Ghedini and Franco Margola and graduated in 1953. He was awarded for the best thesis in composition and thus won a trip to the Salzburg Festival financed by the Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione . During this time he was particularly interested in art, nature, the mountains and philosophy, especially the writings of Eugenio Garin on medieval Platonism . After he became particularly enthusiastic about the music of Igor Stravinskij during his student days , he later occupied himself with twelve-tone music and then with the various positions of musical thought according to Anton von Webern . At the Mozarteum Salzburg he took courses from Friedrich Gulda , Carlo Zecchi and Boris Blacher . From 1958 to 1965 he attended the international summer courses for new music in Darmstadt.

Apart from a brief period in the 1950s, during which he also appeared as a pianist, composing and teaching were the focus of his work for Castiglioni. From 1966 to 1970 he lived in the United States , teaching counterpoint at the Rockefeller Foundation in Buffalo and teaching composition as a visiting professor at the universities of Washington (Seattle), Michigan (Ann Arbor) and California (San Diego). After his return to Italy he taught at the Conservatorio di Trento (Trento) and from 1977 until his death at the Conservatorio di Milano .
