Eugenio Garin

Eugenio Garin ([garɛ̃]; born May 9, 1909 in Rieti ; † December 29, 2004 in Florence ) was an Italian philosopher and historian of philosophy .

Life

Garin studied philosophy in Florence from 1925 to 1929 with Francesco De Sarlo and above all with Ludovico Limentani and then completed a two-year postgraduate course. From 1931 to 1948 he worked as a high school teacher, first in Palermo and then in Florence, where he also worked at the university from 1936. In the academic year 1948–49 he was appointed full professor ; he took up the activity first in Cagliari and then returned to Florence. In 1970 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize . In 1974 he followed a call as a professor to the chair for the history of thought of the Renaissance at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.

Garin's main focus in research and teaching was the history of philosophy , in particular the history of Italian philosophy, as well as cultural history and philosophy . He dealt with humanism and the Renaissance (their connection with the Middle Ages, their conception of man, their concept of science, astrology and Hermetism ), with the Enlightenment and with the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. The prolific scholar published more than 1,400 books and articles.

Garin died on December 29, 2004 at the age of 95 at his home in Florence. In their obituaries, the Italian media praised him as the “giants of modern philosophy”. He was a member of numerous scientific societies and academies in Germany and abroad, u. a. the American Philosophical Society , the British Academy (each since 1972) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1973).
