Toronto Symphony Orchestra
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is a Canadian orchestra based in Toronto . The TSO's music director has been Peter Oundjian since 2004 . The TSO plays classical music .
The TSO was founded in 1922 as the New Symphony Orchestra by a group of Toronto musicians and the native Viennese conductor Luigi von Kunits and gave its first concert in April 1923 in the Massay Hall on Victoria Street in downtown Toronto. In 1927 the orchestra was renamed to its current name. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra gave regular concerts in the Massay Hall from 1923 to 1982. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has been based there since the Roy Thomson Hall opened in autumn 1982.
In 2001, the orchestra ran into financial trouble with $ 7 million in debt. In the following years, the number of subscriptions rose from 20,000 in 2001 to 25,000 in the 2006/2007 season and the occupancy rate in the same period from 56% to 84%. More than 400,000 people attend the orchestra's concerts every year.
