Günther Herbig

Günther Herbig (born November 30, 1931 in Aussig , Czechoslovakia ) is an internationally known German conductor .

Life

Günther Herbig began his training in 1951 at the Franz Liszt University in Weimar with Hermann Abendroth . He received his further training from Hermann Scherchen and Arvīds Jansons . In addition, Herbig was one of the few students of Herbert von Karajan .

After completing his studies, Günther Herbig became Kapellmeister at the German National Theater in Weimar in 1956 . From 1966 to 1972 Herbig was conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra , of which he became chief conductor in 1977. From 1972 to 1977 he was chief conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic . As a result of the political situation in the GDR , Günther Herbig made his debut in the West very late. In 1979 the Dallas Symphony Orchestra made him Principal Guest Conductor. In the same year Herbig also became principal guest conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Due to a dispute with the SED Politburo , Günther Herbig left the GDR in 1984 and moved to the USA. There he took over the position of chief conductor with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra until 1990 . Since then, Günther Herbig has worked with most of the major European and American orchestras and has made several tours to Japan, South America and Australia. From 1988 to 1994 Herbig was chief conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . From 1990 to 1997 he taught conducting at Yale University . From 2000 to 2006 Günther Herbig was chief conductor of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra . Günther Herbig has recorded more than 100 works in his career. His daughter Beate Herbig is a surgeon in Hamburg.
