German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern is a German radio symphony orchestra . The orchestra was founded in September 2007 as a merger of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Kaiserslautern Radio Orchestra .

history

In 1946, under the French military government, the Kaiserslautern Radio Orchestra was founded, and Emmerich Smola became its chief conductor in 1948 . After merging with the Koblenz entertainment orchestra in 1951 as part of a channel restructuring, the Kaiserslautern radio orchestra of Südwestfunk was founded under his leadership . It existed next to a symphony orchestra of the station and was known for high-quality light music and light classical music.

The origins of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra go back to the Great Orchestra of the Saarbrücken Reichsender, founded in 1937 under the direction of Albert Jung . In 1946 the radio station Saarbrücken and its Great Radio Orchestra Saarbrücken were founded under the conductor Rudolf Michl . It made a name for itself among bosses such as Hans Zender , Myung-Whun Chung and Günther Herbig in the field of great symphonic music and modernism. Numerous world premieres of contemporary works have received awards, as have cycles from the traditional repertoire. For example, the complete recording of all Bruckner symphonies received the “Cannes Classical Award” in 2002.

When it became apparent at the end of 1952 that the RIAS could not continue to finance all of its orchestras, Karl Ristenpart accepted an offer from Saarländischen Rundfunk GmbH and left Berlin in the summer of 1953. The Saarland offer consisted of founding a chamber orchestra, with the Ristenpart for both the Saarland radio as well as for the French record label "Les Discophiles français" should deliver recordings. This unusual combination came about through the commitment of the Belgian musicologist Carl de Nys , employed by Radio Saarbrücken , who was primarily interested in a record production of Bach cantatas for France and who did everything to bring Ristenpart to the Saar. With the inclusion of Saarland Radio in ARD, the ensemble called itself the Chamber Orchestra of Saarland Radio from 1957 .

The Saarland Radio Chamber Orchestra survived Karl Ristenpart for another four years, from 1968 to 1972 under the direction of the cellist and former founder of the Zagreb soloists Antonio Janigro . In the summer of 1973 it merged with the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra.

After the SWR succeeded Südwestfunk and Süddeutschem Rundfunk , its three orchestras (plus big band) had just as unfavorable financing prospects as was the case with the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra due to the small size of its transmitter . The 2007 merger resulted in a situation with 152 posts, 45 of them from Kaiserslautern and 107 from Saarbrücken; the previously targeted size of 98 positions (as of 2017) will be achieved without layoffs.

present

The orchestra is jointly supported by the SR and the SWR , with the SR being responsible. The orchestra is based in Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern.

Christoph Poppen , whose contract expired in summer 2011 , has been the chief conductor since 2007 . He was followed from the 2011/12 season by the Gibraltar conductor Karel Mark Chichon , who ended his engagement as the orchestra's chief conductor in May 2017. The Finn Pietari Inkinen has been the new chief conductor of the DRP since the beginning of the 2017/18 season .

With an austerity package from the SR, there should be "savings" that have not yet been specified in detail from 2019. Artistic director Thomas Kleist characterized them with the phrase "without clearing" and put the previous financing share of the SR at "around 9.4 million euros per year".

Venues

Regular venues are the Congress Hall in Saarbrücken, the Fruchthalle in Kaiserslautern and the broadcasting halls of the SR in Saarbrücken and the SWR in Kaiserslautern. Plans for a Saarphilharmonie concert hall in the old E-Werk in Saarbrücken-Burbach were initiated by Christoph Poppen, but the financing has not yet been clarified.

The orchestra has also established itself nationwide; it is a regular guest in Karlsruhe, Mainz, Essen, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, and the Philharmonie Luxembourg . The orchestra's first tours led to Switzerland in 2008, China in 2009 and Paris in 2010. In autumn 2011 the third trip to Japan followed (in continuation of two tours of the RSO Saarbrücken) with Stanisław Skrowaczewski , with this conductor the first as the German Radio Philharmonic . The fourth tour led to South Korea in November 2012 . Another tour followed in September 2014 with Karel Mark Chichon and Myung-Whun Chung to Korea and China.

Internationally renowned soloists such as the singers Elīna Garanča , Angelika Kirchschlager and Juliane Banse , pianists such as Arcadi Volodos , Tzimon Barto and Francesco Piemontesi , the violinists Frank Peter Zimmermann and Janine Jansen and others were guests . a. the conductors Emilio Pomàrico , Jukka-Pekka Saraste , Josep Pons and the "old masters" Stanisław Skrowaczewski, Günther Herbig , Gennadi Roschdestwenski .

The concerts of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie will be broadcast on SR 2 Kulturradio and SWR2 via the German-French radio cooperation across Europe and the EBU worldwide . TV recordings on ARTE and ARD make the orchestra known to a wider audience.

Publications

After the complete recording of the Mendelssohn symphonies, the complete recording of the Tchaikovsky symphonies (Christoph Poppen) and the symphonies of Brahms' contemporary Théodore Gouvy (conducted by Jacques Mercier ) followed. Under the direction of the first guest conductor Stanisław Skrowaczewski, after the award-winning complete recording of all eleven Bruckner symphonies , all Beethoven and Schumann symphonies and a CD with Skrowaczewski's own works as well as all Brahms symphonies have been released (all on OehmsClassics ). In 2014 the orchestra began recording the symphonic work of Antonín Dvořák under Karel Mark Chichon .
