The SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart ( "VE" ) is a broadcasting choir of the Südwestrundfunk .
history
The choir was founded in 1946 under the conductor Otto-Werner Mueller , when the broadcasters had to design the entire music program with their own orchestras in view of the few available sound carriers . The choir of the US radio station Radio Stuttgart initially consisted of thirteen singers from the Linz Reichs-Bruckner Choir and was called the Chamber Choir of Radio Stuttgart . His repertoire included sacred music , folk songs , operas , operettas and recordings for radio plays ; but there were also live concerts. At the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 1947 “The Birth of Peace” was premiered by Hugo Herrmann .
The choir changed names several times: from 1949 it was called the Choir of the South German Radio , from 1959 the South Radio Choir and from 1992 the South Radio Choir Stuttgart . With the merger of Süddeutschem Rundfunk and Südwestfunk in 1998, the choir was given the current name SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart .
The ensemble today
The ensemble regularly consists of 36 singers. The repertoire ranges from classical modern music to demanding works of contemporary music. The choir works with national and international orchestras, in particular with the orchestras of the SWR, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the SWR Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg . Often works by the ensemble have premiered, often composition commissions. His performances are usually broadcast live on SWR2 . Many are also available as audio CDs on the transmitter's label. The a cappella repertoire is the focus of the studio productions .
Conductors
The chief conductor of the SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart was Marcus Creed from 2003 to July 2020 . At the end of his tenure, he was made an honorary conductor.
