Otto-Werner Mueller
Otto-Werner Mueller (born June 23, 1926 in Bensheim ; † February 25, 2016 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) was a German-American conductor and university professor .
Life
Mueller studied conducting and composing, piano, trumpet and violin at the Musisches Gymnasium in Frankfurt (Main) . In 1945 he became director of the chamber music department of Radio Stuttgart and founded and directed the chamber choir of Radio Stuttgart (today SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart ). In 1949 he became opera and operetta conductor at the Heidelberg Theater .
In 1951 he emigrated to Canada. There he worked initially as a répétiteur , later as a conductor for the CBC , where he participated in the programs CBC Wednesday Night and L'Heure du concert . Mueller later took lessons with Igor Markevitch in Mexico and won second prize in the Pan-American conducting competition in 1958.
In the same year he became choirmaster of the opera class at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec. In 1963 he founded the Victoria School of Music, which he directed until 1965. At the same time he also became conductor of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra. As a visiting professor at the Moscow Conservatory, he taught a. a. Maxim Shostakovich and Rudolf Barschai . His performance of The Barber of Seville for CBC television won an Emmy Award for Best Foreign Production in the United States in 1965 .
In 1967 Otto-Werner Mueller moved to the USA. In the following year and 1970 he toured the Soviet Union, where he a. a. performed in Moscow , Leningrad and Riga . He then worked as a conductor in North America a. a. with the San Diego Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra , and the Symphony Orchestras of Atlanta , Detroit , St. Louis , Fort Worth and Hartford and has worked as a guest conductor a. a. with the Scottish National Orchestra and the Warsaw Philharmonic . Mueller conducted the world premieres of several works by Canadian composers, including André Prévost's Pyknon (1966) and Diallèle , Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté's Symphony Concerto and Malcolm Forsyth's 2nd Symphony.
As a long-time conducting teacher and orchestra educator, he built himself a. a. at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the Music School at Yale University in New Haven , the Juilliard School of Music in New York, and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia . His graduates include a. the former music director of the New York Philharmonic Alan Gilbert , the Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi and the German conductor Jens Georg Bachmann .
