André Prévost

Joseph Gaston Charles André Prévost (born July 30, 1934 in Hawkesbury , Ontario , † January 27, 2001 in Montreal ) was a Canadian composer.

The great-grandson of the composer Gustave Smith studied from 1951 at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec with Isabelle Delorme , Papineau-Couture and Clermont Pépin . In 1959 he won the Sarah Fischer Composition Prize and, as a bassoonist in a wind trio, the Chamber Music Prize of the Amis de l'art Foundation . With grants from the Canada Council and the government of Québec, he went to Paris, where he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Olivier Messiaen and at the École normal with Henri Dutilleux .

From 1962 Prévost taught at the Séminaire de Joliette and the Collège des Eudistes in Rosemont. In 1963 he received a Prix ​​d'Europe and in the summer of 1964 he studied electronic music with Michel Phillipot at the ORTF in Paris. From 1964 he worked on behalf of the Canadian Ministry of Culture on a musical work on the topic of Man and His World for Expo 67 . The work for large orchestra, three choirs and two speakers based on a poem by Michèle Lalonde was premiered on April 29, 1967 under Pierre Hétu .

From 1964 to 1996 Prévost taught at the Music Faculty of the University of Montreal . In 1965 he worked at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood with Gunther Schuller , Donald Martino , Aaron Copland and Zoltán Kodály . During a stay in Switzerland (1972 and 1973) two commissioned works were created for the CBC : the Missa de Profundis (which premiered in 1973) and the Choréographie I , which was premiered by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1975.

Prévost's Cantate pour cordes , commissioned by Yehudi Menuhin , was premiered at the Guelph Spring Festival in 1987 by the Orchester Camerata Lysy of Gstaad under Menuhin's direction . The creation of the work was documented by the CBC in 1990 in the program Menuhin - Prévost, a creative adventure .
