Maxim Dmitrijewitsch Schostakowitsch ( Russian Максим Дмитриевич Шостакович ; born May 10, 1938 in Leningrad ) is a Russian conductor and pianist .

Life

Maxim Shostakovich was born as the second child of Dmitri Shostakovich and Nina Warsar. He received his musical training first at the Leningrad Music School, then at the Moscow Conservatory, a. a. with Gennadi Roschdestwenski , Igor Markevitch , and Otto-Werner Mueller . In 1971 he became chief conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra of the USSR and in this capacity also conducted the world premiere of his father's 15th symphony on January 8, 1972. On April 11, 1981, after a concert in Fürth, he left the orchestra and emigrated with his son in the USA . After temporarily conducting the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra (1986–1991) and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra , he returned to his homeland for the first time since 1981 in June 1994 to conduct in St. Petersburg.

Maxim is the dedicatee of his father's 2nd piano concerto and was also the pianist of the premiere. Since 1975 he has performed many of his father's works, some of which are less well known, and thus contributed to their distribution.

His son Dmitri Maximowitsch Shostakowitsch is also a pianist.
