The Rundfunkchor Berlin is a mixed choir supported by the Rundfunk-Orchester und -Chöre gGmbH . As one of the few large professional choirs in Berlin , but also in Germany , he is known both in Germany and in many other countries around the world.

prehistory

In 1925 the Berliner Funkchor was founded, which worked with conductors such as Selmar Meyrowitz , Max von Schillings , George Szell , Hermann Scherchen , Otto Klemperer and Erich Kleiber , the father of Carlos Kleiber . The funk choir sang in world premieres by composers such as Heinrich Kaminski , Arthur Honegger , Hans Gál , Darius Milhaud , Hugo Kaun , Ernst Krenek , Josef Matthias Hauer and Kurt Weill .

In June 1933, under the direction of Heinzkarl Weigl , the choir was renamed the Reichssender Berlin choir , which was dissolved on September 15, 1943.

In May 1945, choir work was resumed immediately after the end of the Second World War . At the request of the Berliner Rundfunk , Helmut Koch joined the twenty-six most qualified singers from various professional choirs under the name Solistenvereinigung des Berliner Rundfunks to form a permanent professional choir. In July 1948 he also founded the Great Choir of the Berlin Radio . With the recording of Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo , the choir won the Grand Prix du Disque in 1945 .

When the German broadcaster was re-established in the GDR in 1953 , the soloists' association became the sponsor of the new broadcaster.

Recent past

In 1973 the two choirs Berliner Solistenvereinigung and Großer Chor des Berliner Rundfunks were merged to form the Rundfunkchor Berlin . In the following years Kurt Masur , Otmar Suitner , Heinz Rögner and Wolf-Dieter Hauschild were among the conductors . From 1982 to 1993 Dietrich Knothe and from 1994 to 2001 Robin Gritton took over the direction of the choir.

From 2001 to 2015 Simon Halsey was chief conductor of the radio choir and was bid farewell on May 30, 2015 with the cross-genre project "Liberté" at the Funkhaus Berlin . At the end of his tenure, he was appointed honorary conductor of the choir and will remain associated with the ensemble as a guest conductor. As Halsey's successor, Gijs Leenaars has been chief conductor since the beginning of the 2015/16 season .

Tours have taken the choir to Australia, England, France, USA, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Monaco and Japan, among others. The Rundfunkchor Berlin has a special bond with the Orchester Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo . Its chief conductor, Marek Janowski , who is also the artistic chief conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra , engages the radio choir several times a year in Monte Carlo , Monaco , as the choir of the orchestra there, as Monte Carlo itself does not have a professional choir. The Rundfunkchor Berlin also sang in 2005 at the coronation ceremony of Prince Albert as Prince of Monaco.

The sing-along concert, which has been held once a year since 2003, has met with a great response, in which the choir, after rehearsing together, performs a famous choral work with up to 1000 amateur singers.

In 2005 the Rundfunkchor Berlin participated in the inauguration of the reconstructed Frauenkirche in Dresden at the world premiere of the Te Deum for solos, choir and orchestra by Siegfried Matthus (* 1934).

The second education collaboration with Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker began in spring 2006 . After Ravel's Daphnis & Chloé 2006, Orff's Carmina Burana followed . The radio choir rehearsed the choir part with young people, while choreographer Royston Maldoom rehearsed the dance part with other students. The dance project Carmina Burana was performed in May 2006 in the Arena Berlin .

In September 2006 the Rundfunkchor Berlin founded the LeaderChor Berlin , which consists of executives and meets once a year on a project basis.

Simon Halsey, the chief conductor of the Rundfunkchor Berlin, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class on January 25, 2011 by State Secretary for Culture André Schmitz .

In 2011 the Rundfunkchor Berlin received the Grammy for the third time (see awards).
