Dietrich Knothe
Dietrich Knothe (born January 6, 1929 in Dresden ; † September 7, 2000 in Berlin ) was a German conductor and choir director .
Life
In 1939, at the age of 10, Knothe joined the St. Thomas Choir at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig under conductor Günther Ramin . After studying at the music academies in Leipzig and Berlin-Charlottenburg , Knothe worked at the Leipzig Radio Choir from 1953 .
In 1955 he founded the Capella Lipsiensis , a soloist ensemble with which he performed mainly Renaissance and Baroque music.
For political reasons, Knothe was dismissed without notice in 1962 when he and his choir refrained from singing the national anthem after a concert . Until he was appointed vice director of the Berlin Singakademie in 1966 , Knothe was a taxi driver and pianist in a ballet school . In 1975 he was promoted to director of the Berlin Singakademie. In 1979 he was awarded the GDR Art Prize.
From 1982 until his retirement in 1993, Knothe was chief conductor of the Berlin Radio Choir . In 1985 he was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle district .
He is buried in the Evangelical Cemetery of the Rahnsdorf-Wilhelmshagen community (Saarower Weg 51), Department C.
