Carl Stefan Martin Parkman (born June 22, 1952 in Uppsala , Sweden ) is a Swedish conductor , university teacher and choir director .

Life

Parkman grew up in his hometown and studied singing and conducting at Uppsala University . In 1976, at the age of 24, he took over the direction of the boys' choir at Uppsala Cathedral . With this choir, which he directed until 1988, he made several concert tours abroad. Since 1983 he has been the conductor of the Uppsala Akademiska Kammarkör and was also the director of the Royal Philharmonic Choir in Stockholm for several years .

From 1989 to 2002 Parkman was chief conductor of the Danish Radio Choir and then until 2005 of the Swedish Radio Choir . Since 1998 he has been appointed director of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music . Over the past two decades he has conducted numerous Scandinavian orchestras, as well as choir and opera performances in Europe and the USA . In 2010 he conducted the world premieres of several choral works by the Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi .

Since the 2014/15 season he has been chief conductor of the WDR Rundfunkchor Köln .

Parkman is Eric Ericson Professor of Choral Conducting at Uppsala University. He is the older brother of the Swedish composer Håkan Parkman .
