The ARD Popnacht is the third Community Night program of the ARD -Hörfunks. It can be heard Monday to Friday from 0:05 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. and on weekends and national holidays from 0:05 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. The ARD Pop Night is produced daily by SWR3 in Baden-Baden and broadcast on nine ARD pop waves.

The ARD Pop Night will be moderated live. Your music mix consists primarily of pop hits. Music and moderation are comparable to the daily programming of most of the absorbing stations. There is also traffic information every half hour and news every hour. The program often includes interactive elements such as conversations or games with listeners calling in the studio.

technology

The ARD-Popnacht is broadcast via the ARD-Stern and the HYBNET from the SWR as the broadcasting institution to the affiliated programs. The signal distributed in this way is tapped by SWR3 before sound processing . The news on Popnacht on the hour has been exactly three minutes long since 2018. Affiliated programs can send their own regional news during the community program. In addition, it is now technically possible to separate program elements between the SWR3 distribution channels and the receiving programs. A jingle can be broadcast on SWR3 with its own ID and at the same time via the connected programs with the neutral ID "Die Popnacht".

development

Early years

On December 23, 1985 the program was broadcast for the first time under the name ARD-Nachtrock . The broadcast time was from 0:05 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., on weekends until 4:00 a.m. It was extended in hourly steps until 6:00 a.m. Each night a different ARD broadcaster took over the night coverage for all connected pop waves of the broadcasting network.

On January 1, 1990, the show was renamed and restructured into ARD Popnacht . From then on, the music selection was based on "melodically emphasized pop music".

Exits in the period from 1988 to 2000

As of 1988, some programs withdrew from the takeover of the Community program. These included SWF3 (1988), Bayern 3 (1989), NDR 2 (1991), WDR 1 (1995) and Antenne Brandenburg (2000). Instead, the waves created their own night program or took on other programs. Other waves that took over the Popnacht were discontinued, for example Radio B Zwei in 1997 and SDR 3 the following year . The MDR , which was only founded in 1991, never broadcast Popnacht. The remaining small institutions largely reduced their participation for reasons of cost.

At the (widespread) low point between 2000 and 2005, Popnacht could only be heard on Thursday morning in three federal states: Bremen ( Bremen Vier ), Saarland ( SR 1 Europawelle ) and Hesse ( hr1 and hr3 ). In 2005 there was a new addition with rbb 88.8 ; the program previously took over the ARD night express.

Until January 2008, Popnacht could be heard on Sunday morning and every four weeks on Tuesday mornings on Bayern 3 , as the station had basically taken over night programming from SWR3 until then , with the exception of Friday morning and lastly with the exception of Saturday morning. Bayern 3 produced the ARD Popnacht itself on Friday morning. Bayern 3 has been broadcasting its own night program since 2008, but Bayern 3 continued to organize the Popnacht on Friday until December 2010.

From May 2008 to August 2010, the only digital radio took over DAB receivable NDR 2 Plus ARD Popnacht.

Since January 2009, WDR 2 has not had its own daily night program. The wave initially took over the ARD Popnacht. The participation was also reduced, the show was produced in 2¾ nights by 2008 (Mondays, Wednesdays and three out of four Tuesdays), and since 2009 WDR 2 has only sponsored Popnacht twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays). From then on, SWR3 broadcast on Tuesdays.

In 2010, Hessischer Rundfunk decided not to produce Popnacht, which was previously organized by hr3 every 2nd Thursday . From then on, the ARD Popnacht was also delivered every 2nd Thursday by SWR3.

Bayern 3 , which organized the ARD Popnacht on Friday morning until 2010, as well as Bremen Vier and SR 1 Europawelle , which each gave the Popnacht once a month on Thursday morning, got out at the end of 2010. Finally, WDR 2 ended the takeover of Popnacht in January 2011.

Centralization 2011

At the beginning of the 2010s, the ARD night programs were restructured. Since then, the broadcasters no longer alternate daily with the production of a program. Rather, only one institution is responsible for the various night programs. At the ARD Popnacht it is the Südwestrundfunk . So since January 2011 SWR3 has been organizing the ARD Pop Night every day.

Bremen Vier took over all of the LateLine programs until the end of September 2018 and therefore did not get on to Popnacht until 1 a.m. Up to May 2014 there were four programs (from Monday to Tuesday to Thursday to Friday; each time from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.), then the program was canceled from Monday to Tuesday.

Return to the nationwide community program from 2018

Since January 17, 2018, NDR 2 and WDR 2 have been taking over ARD Popnacht. On November 1, 2019, the Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk was added with MDR Jump . The ARD-Popnacht is broadcast in 14 of the 16 federal states and is again almost nationwide joint night program of the ARD-Popwellen.

Situation today

The ARD Popnacht can be heard in 2019 on the broadcasting program SWR3 and on the following waves:

Since 2018, the affiliated stations have been able to hide their own news from the community program on the hour. NDR and WDR will use this opportunity in 2019. Furthermore, Bremen Vier takes over the news of the NDR in the ARD Popnacht. With the other programs, the national news of the Südwestrundfunk can be heard.
