Josep Pons i Viladomat (* 1957 in Puigreig ( Berguedà )) is a Catalan conductor. Since 1998 he has been deputy musical director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona since September 2012 .

life and work

On the advice of his teacher in Puigreig, Josep Pons switched to the Escolania de Montserrat at the age of nine because of his outstanding boy's voice , where he received musical training. From the age of 12 he also received organ lessons there. Already at this time he decided to dedicate his life to music. Later he became a student of Antoni Ros i Marbà (conducting) and Josep Soler (composition) at the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona .

From 1988 to 1990 Pons directed the mixed Barcelona choir Coral Càrmina . After founding the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure in 1985, he devoted himself almost exclusively to conducting orchestras. He directed this orchestra from the beginning until 1997. With this Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure he appeared as a conductor at renowned music festivals with a repertoire mainly from the 20th century. From 1993 to 2001 Pons directed the newly founded Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya (JONC), the youth orchestra of Catalonia. He was also musical director of the Orquesta Nacional de España (2003–2014), of which he is still honorary conductor, and of the Orquestra Ciutat de Granada (1994–2004). As Music Director of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Ceremonies , Pons was awarded several prizes, including the Premi Nacional de Música , which he received in 1999. Since 1998 Pons has been acting as deputy and since September 2012 has been the chief musical director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu . Pons works closely with international orchestras such as the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig , the Orchester de Paris , the Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse , the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the BBC Symphony Orchestra .

Pons discography includes over 50 CDs and DVDs. It includes recordings by Manuel de Falla and French composers, which are considered benchmark recordings and for which he has received numerous awards. His recording of De Fallas Noches en los jardines de España with pianist Javier Perianes won the Melancolía Music Prize , with  Patricia Petibon he won the Gramophone Editor's Choice, and his collaboration with Tomatito earned him a Grammy. In 1999 Pons received the Spanish National Music Prize for his outstanding work on 20th century music.
