The Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure (Chamber Orchestra Free Theater Barcelona) was a chamber orchestra dedicated to the music of the 20th century that provided musical support for theater productions. The orchestra was founded in 1985 by Josep Pons , Jaume Cortadellas and Lluís Vidal on the initiative of the theater director Fabià Puigserver in Barcelona . It was located in the Teatre Lliure , the free theater of Barcelona.

history

The ensemble consisted of five winds, five strings, a trumpet, a trombone, a piano and drums. If the repertoire required it, the ensemble could be expanded. The objectives of the orchestra can be summarized in the following three points:

  • the revision of contemporary classics and the world premiere of commissioned works.
  • the reinterpretation of contemporary, popular and traditional musical works in order to adapt them for performance by a chamber ensemble.
  • the support of theater productions of the Teatre Lliure with suitable stage music.

In the last years of its existence, the orchestra set itself the task of rereading and performing music from bygone eras.

In 1991 the first recording with music by Manuel de Falla was released , which was particularly well received by French music critics. Further recordings with works by Frederic Mompou , Robert Gerhard , Josep Soler and Luis de Pablo were made. In 1996 the opera Pepita Jiménez by Isaac Albéniz was recorded for the first time worldwide , a version that had previously been revised by Josep Soler. In 1997 the recordings of Astor Piazolla were a huge success.

Also in 1997 Josep Pons gave up the position of musical director, which he held from the beginning. This task was now performed , depending on the performance, by José Ramón Encinar , Ernest Martínez i Izquierdo , Antoni Ros i Marbà or by the composers whose pieces were presented. The composers Joan Guinjoan , Luis de Pablo, Tomás Marco , Egberto Gismonti , George Benjamin and C. Miranda are examples of the latter pattern of action . They worked with soloists such as Victòria dels Àngels , Susan Chilcott and Dave Liebman and gave concerts in England and France. In addition to their own concert series, they also took part in international music festivals.

With and after moving into the new venue in the Palau de l'Agricultura de Barcelona in 2001, the orchestra became more focused on theater work. The music ensemble stopped its activities at the end of the 2002/2003 season.

The orchestra received the Premi Nacional de música a l'intèrpret de música contemporània (interpreter's prize for contemporary music) in 1990 and the City of Barcelona Prize in 1992 for its cultural output in the field of music .
