Lluís Vidal Prats (* 1954 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish pianist and composer who is important in jazz as well as an interpreter of new music and an ensemble leader.

Live and act

Vidal learned piano, solfeggio and counterpoint , among others at the Conservatorio Superior Municipal de Música in Barcelona. He first worked as a member of the group of the songwriter Ramon Muntaner , with whom he recorded three albums since 1975. In addition, he was self-taught with jazz. In 1977 he founded the quartet Catalonia (titled album in 1980 on CUSPIDE ) with saxophonist Antonio Peral, bassist and drummer Rafael Escoté Ángel Pereira, with whom he also operated a drum and piano duo.

From 1982 Vidal worked with his own jazz trio, which also accompanied musicians such as Dave Liebman (joint album on Fresh Sound Records 1997), John Abercrombie , Kenny Wheeler , Mark Feldman and Gerard Presencer , but also performed with symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles and appeared on the album in 2009 Mompiana interpreted pieces by Mompou with Dave Douglas and Perico Sambeat . His trio currently includes drummer David Xirgu and double bass player David Mengual; his repertoire currently consists of his own compositions and idiosyncratic interpretations of Catalan folk songs.

In 1983 Vidal also founded the Onix jazz ensemble with the Portuguese double bass player Zè Eduardo, the American trumpeter Michael Kaupa (later replaced by the guitarist Josep Albert Cubero) and the drummer Jorge Rossy , who was very active. In 1987 he founded the group Ictus with Mario and Jorge Rossy and Perico Sambeat , with whom he also released albums. In 2004 he formed a duo with the singer Carme Canela ( Univers Miles ).

In 1985, together with Josep Pons and Jaume Cortadellas, Vidal founded the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure , which was dedicated to the interpretation of 20th century classical music, with which he performed at renowned festivals in Europe and as a soloist for example Manuel de Fallas “Concert for Harpsichord and five instruments ”and Josep Soler's “ Concert de cambra ”(recordings for Harmonia Mundi ). He was also active as artistic and musical director and composer for this long-standing ensemble.

After the Argentine bandoneonist Pablo Mainetti arrived in Spain, Vidal founded the Ensemble Araca in 1995, together with Horacio Fumero on double bass and Pere Bardagí on violin , which interpreted a repertoire of Tango Nuevos .

As a composer he wrote for jazz ensembles as well as for those of the classical music (up to the symphony orchestra), but also pieces that belong to the third stream like the Suite Portugalia (1994) for wind octet and jazz trio or La llegenda de Sant Jordi (2009) for a traditional cobla ensemble and jazz trio.

From 1979 he taught piano and combo at the Aula de Música Moderna i Jazz in Barcelona and later at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona, ​​of which he was temporarily musical director. He also took part as a lecturer in several seminars organized by the International Association of Jazz Schools (ISAJ) in Dublin (1991), Siena (1992), Graz (1993) and New York (1994). At the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya , founded in 2001, he is a professor in the Department of Jazz and Modern Music.
