Gerard Presencer (born September 12, 1972 in Watford , Hertfordshire , England ) is a British trumpeter and flugelhorn player of modern jazz , who has also emerged as a soloist in pop music. According to Friedel Keim , he is "one of the greatest talents of the 1990s".

Live and act

Presencer was a musical prodigy ; Although he only turned to the trumpet at the age of nine, at the age of eleven he already became the youngest member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra , in which he was trained for almost five years. He then played in Clark Tracey's band , the Pizza Expres Modern Jazz Sextet, and Stan Tracey's groups . He then worked with Peter King , John Dankworth , Julian Joseph , Ronnie Scott , Cleo Laine , Tim Garland and Jason Rebello as well as with international musicians such as Johnny Griffin , Phil Woods , Joe Sample , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen , Roy Hargrove , Red Rodney , Herbie Hancock , Chick Corea and Bob Berg . In 1993 he was also involved as a soloist on Us3's Cantaloop ( Blue Notes best-selling piece). He released three albums under his own name. Since 1991 he has been a member of the Charlie Watts tentet , with whom he has recorded four albums.

He has been a member of the DR Big Band since 2010 and lives in Copenhagen . As a studio musician, he has also recorded with Sting , Jamiroquai , Zero 7 , James Brown , Ray Charles , Robbie Williams , Kylie Minogue , Joni Mitchell , The Spice Girls , Paul Weller , Tina Turner , Incognito , Kula Shaker , and the Pet Shop Boys . He also composes for the film industry.

Presencer remains active as a jazz teacher and has taught at the Guildhall School of Music , Leeds College of Music , Thames Valley University and the Trinity School of Music . In 1999 he was appointed professor of trumpet at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin . He was also head of the jazz department of the Royal Academy of Music from 1999 to 2010 .

Prizes and awards

Presencer was honored for his musical achievements as best trumpeter at the BT Jazz Awards four times, most recently in 2002.
