National Youth Jazz Orchestra
The National Youth Jazz Orchestra ( NYJO ) is an English jazz - orchestra , the 1965 by Bill Ashton was founded. It gives young musicians the opportunity to perform big band jazz in larger concert halls, theaters such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall, as well as on radio and television, and to record albums; it also commissions British composers and arrangers.
History of the orchestra
The Westminster , London-based orchestra began as the London Schools' Jazz Orchestra and soon grew into a nationwide orchestra. The first edition of NYJO included u. a. Stan Sulzmann . The NYJO also went on numerous international tours, mostly to European countries, but also to the USA, Australia and New Zealand. The numerous recordings of NYJO also include a tribute album (1990) to jazz pianist, big band leader and arranger Harry South .
Many well-known English musicians have been members of the NYJO over the past thirty years, including a. Julian Argüelles , Guy Barker , Chris Biscoe , Richard James Burgess , Geoff Castle , Chris Dagley , Sheena Davis , Jim Hart , Chris Hunter , Carol Kenyon , Phil Lee , Paul Lytton , Paul Nieman , Mark Nightingale , Brian Priestley , Simon Phillips , Frank Ricotti , Gerard Presencer , Gwilym Simcock , Gail Thompson , Phil Todd , Nigel Hitchcock and Amy Winehouse .
In addition to the NYJO , the National Youth Orchestra of Wales has existed since 1945 and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain since 1948 .
Current status
Since 2012, the members of the orchestra have been formally selected and have to perform. In addition to the orchestra (now also called NYJO 1 ), there is NYJO 2 as an entry-level band. Both formations rehearse every Saturday at the Cockpit Theater (Marylebone) near Edgware Road, London. The NYJO London has also existed since 2011 , with a focus on school-age musicians from the greater London area.
