Carol Kenyon , occasionally also Karol Kenyon , (* 1959 ) is a British singer who has presented a multifaceted repertoire in the course of her ongoing career . Among other things, she sang straight pop , jazz ballads and classical pieces.

biography

As a child, Kenyon was motivated to sing and dance. She received lessons and attended art festivals, learned to play the piano, and listened to her father's jazz records. As a member of the school choir, she sang at a festival in Harrow , where she caught the attention of the young musician Guy Barker , who also performed there. He motivated her and sparked her serious and focused interest in singing. Together, they were members of the London jazz-rock - band Steam Heat. It was also Barker who brought Kenyon to the attention of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra , where she introduced herself and sang the porgy-and-Bess song Summertime so well that she was accepted as a regular band singer for NYJO at the age of 14. Bill Ashton and others wrote songs specifically for Kenyon that quickly made her an integral part of the band's performances, including singing solos. The song Get It Right , with her as the lead singer, was released on a single in 1976 . She toured the UK with NYJO, appeared on television and took part in the 1978 Royal Command Variety Performance in London .

After leaving NYJO, Kenyon sang with Car Park, a band of former NYJO members led by jazz musicians Dick Morrissey and Jim Mullen . As a backing band for various performers, the group appeared regularly on television and toured with several artists, including Mick Jagger . Kenyon was a member of Heaven 17 from 1982 to 1988 and sang on the hit single Temptation , which reached number 2 in the UK charts in 1983. She also got a solo contract with A&M Records and performed as "Warrior Woman" in bright black leather clothes and with a living hawk. With the song of the same name, she had a small chart hit back home in 1984. The follow-up single Dance with Me also briefly entered the UK charts. In 1985 she took over the lead vocals on Paul Hardcastle's single Don't Waste My Time , which became an international hit in 1986. Also in 1986 Kenyon was an accompanying singer on the tour of the pop band Go West .

Kenyon also appeared on television in subsequent years and sang background on several soundtracks , including Cerrones Dancing Machine and Willy Bogner's Fire, Ice & Dynamite (both 1990), Young Soul Rebels (1991) and Knight Moves - Ein Murderisches Spiel (1992). She was a guest singer in 1993 on Here's My A , a hit from the dance project Rapination. In 1995 she returned from Showopen to the Royal Command Variety Performance. She has also sung for Duran Duran , Kylie Minogue , Mike Oldfield , Jon & Vangelis , Pet Shop Boys , Gary Moore , Pink Floyd , Tommy Shaw , Roger Waters , Morrissey-Mullen , Tears for Fears and Van Morrison since the 1980s . In 2006 she was on the soundtrack of the anniversary version of The Muppets Christmas Story in the background.
