Jim Mullen
Jim Mullen (* 26. November 1945 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish jazz - and jazz-rock - guitarist .
Live and act
Mullen worked with Brian Auger 's Oblivion Express in the 1960s and appeared on the band's first three albums. He then played with the band Kokomo and toured the United States with the Average White Band . There he met tenor saxophonist Dick Morrissey in the mid-1970s , with whom he founded the funk group Morrissey-Mullen , which existed until 1985 .
Mullen has also worked with Guy Barker (1991), Geoff Gascoyne ( Voices of Spring , 1995), Mornington Lockett , the Gail Thompson Big Band, Chad Wackerman , Pete Brown & Piblokto! , Mose Allison , Hamish Stuart , Tam White , Claire Martin , Mike Carr , Jimmy Witherspoon and Georgie Fame . He has received several awards including the British Telecom Jazz Award (for best guitarist in 1994, 1996 and 2000), and won the British Jazz Awards for guitar in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2018 .
Like Wes Montgomery before him, Mullen plays with his thumb instead of an opening pick .
