Geoff Gascoyne
Geoff Gascoyne (* 23. November 1963 in Nottingham ) is a British jazz - bassist , arranger , composer and bandleader.
Live and act
Geoff Gascoyne began playing the piano at the age of six, received classical training in his youth and played the bass guitar in a youth band. In 1978 he moved to London and studied at St Martin's School of Art . In 1981 he made his first professional appearances. After finishing his studies in 1981 he worked as a freelance musician; around 1988 he began to deal with jazz music.
In 1990 he became a member of the band Everything but the Girl , to which he belonged for three years; After touring the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan, the album Worldwide was created in 1991 . In 1994 he worked in the hip-hop-jazz-rap formation Us3 . In 1993 he worked with Jim Mullen and Ian Shaw ; in the same year he founded the formation Wabash with the guitarist Malcolm MacFarlane . During this time he switched from the bass guitar to the double bass and concentrated on composing. During a tour through Germany, he met Georgie Fame , with whom he has worked since then. Gascoyne became a member of his band in 1995 and also took part on his tour with Van Morrison .
In 1995 his first album was released under his own name Voices of Spring , on which Gerard Presencer , Tim Garland , Mark Lockheart , Jim Mullen and Claire Martin contributed. He made guest appearances with a band at London's Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club , participated in recording sessions and worked as a music teacher and tutor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1996 he became a member of Guy Barker's band . After a second album in 1997 ( Winter Wonderland ), in which he interpreted Christmas carols in a duo with pianist Pete Churchill , he went on a European tour in 1998 with Bill Bruford's formation Earthworks and took part in recordings of Lisa Stansfield . In 1999 he put together his new quartet and worked on the score for the feature film The Talented Mr. Ripley and the Revue Lenny , in which he accompanied Dianne Reeves , Ben Sidran and Norma Winstone . Gascoyne also worked as an arranger on recordings for Ian Shaw and Cedar Walton .
In the 2000s he worked as arranger for Trudy Kerr ( Daydream ), with whom he has been married since 2002, with Georgie Fame ( Relationships ) and with the opera singer Willard White.In 2001, another album was released in a quartet with Ben Castle, Gareth Williams and Sebastiaan De Krom and appearances at Ronnie Scott's Club in London . In 2002 a joint album was created with the singer Jamie Cullum ( Songs of the Summer ), on whose albums Pointless Nostalgic , Twentysomething and Catching Tales he played a major role as bassist and arranger.
