Trudy Kerr

Trudy Kerr (born January 3, 1963 in Brisbane ) is an Australian jazz singer .

Live and act

Kerr began singing professionally in clubs and festivals on the east coast of Australia and the Far East at the age of 17 and moved to London in 1990. In 1994/95 she attended a jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . Then she formed her own band with musicians from the London jazz scene. She played regularly in London jazz clubs (like Ronnie Scott’s - Ronnie Scott hired her for his club for a week in 1995 - and at Pizza in the Park ) and at local jazz festivals.

In 1997 their first album Sweet Surprise was released , recorded with their trio (Phil Peskett, piano, Andy Hamilton, bass, Mark Fletcher, drums) and the saxophonist Dave O'Higgins and the Australian guitarist Mark Johns . In 1998 the album Trudy (Jazzizit) followed with saxophonist Mornington Lockett and Acker Bilk (for whom she had previously worked as a secretary at the beginning of her career). Other albums followed such as Day Dream (2000) with Mulgrew Miller .

She played with Jan Lundgren , Bob Dorough , pianist Michael Garrick (who accompanied her on her 2009 album Like Minds ) and Jamie Cullum , among others . Her regular trio currently (2012) consists of the pianist Tom Cawley , Geoff Gascoyne and the drummer Seb de Krom (who also accompanies Jamie Cullum). She played in tribute concerts in memory of Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan with trumpeter Dick Pearce and saxophonist Derek Nash . She is married to bassist Geoff Gascoyne. He arranged for Kerr; Together they presented the album Rhythm of Life with their own compositions in 2012 .

Her favorite singers are Carmen McRae , Norma Winstone and Nancy Wilson , as well as Miles Davis and Antônio Carlos Jobim as influences.

Kerr has taught in summer schools and at the Jazz Academy and Trinity Laban Conservatory and (co) hosts a jazz program on the BBC. She is touring the UK with her series of jazz events for children, Jazz for Juniors .
