Michael Garrick
Michael Garrick MBE (born May 30, 1933 in Enfield Town , † November 11, 2011 in Harefield ) was a British pianist (also organist) and composer of modern jazz .
biography
Garrick first studied English at University College London , but then devoted himself to music as an autodidact . In the late 1950s he led his own jazz combos in London and was one of the first in Great Britain to hold poetry and jazz events together with Jeremy Robson and other authors since 1959 . His quintet at the time included Joe Harriott and Shake Keane . With his trio, which included bassist Dave Green and drummer Colin Barnes, he made a very early entry into free jazz (the TrioAlbum Moonscape was initially only released in small numbers on its own label). Between 1965 and 1969 he was a member of the quintet of Don Rendell and Ian Carr , for which he also composed. He combined his own sextet or septet for the interpretation of his sacred composition “Jazz Praises” with a large choir and the church organ (premiered in 1968 in St Paul's Cathedral ). Other oratorios ( Judas' Kiss , 1971; Bovingdon Poppies , 1993) and other jazz choral works ( Mr Smith's Apocalypse , 1969; A Zodiac of Angels , 1988) followed. In the early 1970s he studied at Berklee College of Music and also dealt with Indian music , which was also reflected in his compositions. Garrick created A Hobbit Suite or Gemstones in 1973 , which was based on JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit , which he (as well as later works) performed with singer Norma Winstone .
Garrick taught jazz as a professor at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music , but also at the Guildhall School of Music and, since 1989, at the Jazz Academy he founded . In 2010 Garrick was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire . He published his autobiography in the same year under the title Dusk Fire: Jazz in English Hands.
