Art Subjects (born November 26, 1939 in Manchester ) is a British modern jazz saxophonist .

Topics studied medicine (between 1958 and 1961 in Cambridge , then until 1964 in London ) and specialized as an orthopedic surgeon before working as a consulting doctor. During his student days at Cambridge he played on the side in the university's jazz band, which was recognized as the leading British university band between 1959 and 1962. After moving to London he came into contact with the blues scene and became a member of the bands of Alexis Korner ( Red Hot from Alex , 1964; Blues Incorporated , 1965) and Jack Bruce . He also played with Rod Stewart , Joe Cocker , Charlie Watts and Long John Baldry before clearly turning to jazz. In 1965 he represented his country in the International Peter Stuyvesant Jazz Orchestra , which performed at the Zurich Jazz Festival . In the late 1960s and early 1970s he played in the bands of Michael Garrett and Graham Collier . In 1974 he started working with Stan Tracey (in very different formations, especially quartet, octet, big band).

Themes also toured with Al Haig , Red Rodney , Sal Nistico and Ian Carr and also performed with Nat Adderley , George Coleman and Billy Mitchell . Since 1995 he has been concentrating entirely on his musical career. Since then he has run his own quartet together with pianist John Critchinson . As an "extremely talented and original" wind player according to Ian Carr, he also plays the sopranino in addition to the tenor and soprano saxophone .
