Nathaniel "Nat" Adderley (born November 25, 1931 in Tampa , Florida , † January 2, 2000 in Lakeland , Florida) was an American jazz cornet player , trumpeter , composer and band leader. He became known through his participation in the band of his brother Julian "Cannonball" Adderley .

Life

Nat Adderley was a jazz singer in her early teens, learned trumpet at the age of 15 and then switched to cornet. Similar to his brother Cannonball Adderley , he played in army bands during his military service and then got an engagement in Lionel Hampton's band in 1954/55 , then with Stan Kenton . In 1955 a first album was released under his own name. After a brief participation in the quintet of his brother (1956), which failed for financial reasons, Nat Adderley worked after the change of Cannonball to Miles Davis with JJ Johnson and in 1959 in Woody Herman and George Shearing , and then into the founded again Cannonball Adderley Quintet enter . He was a member of this until his brother's death in 1975.

In addition to this activity, Nat Adderley has repeatedly recorded albums with his own bands, such as studio big bands or musicians such as Joe Henderson , King Curtis , Jerome Richardson , Junior Mance and Wes Montgomery ( Work Song , 1960). One of his best albums is Little Big Horn, recorded in 1963 with Mance and Henderson as well as Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell ! .

In 1961 he worked on the album Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man and Other Billie Holiday Classics . After brief teaching and tours as a guest soloist with Peter Herbolzheimer's Big Band, Nat founded a new formation in 1976, one year after Cannonball's death, with saxophonist John Stubblefield , pianist Onaje Allan Gumbs , bassist Fernando Gumbs and drummer Ira Buddy Williams . His albums from this time fell through the criticism rather; however, his 1977 concert in Yokohama with Jay Jay Johnson was a great success .

In 1980 he appeared at European festivals with the Adderley Brotherhood , which was to commemorate the great times of the quintet with his brother. In 1981 he performed at the Kool Festival , worked in New York in 1982 and again with Jay Jay Johnson in 1984. In the 1990s u. a Sonny Fortune in his band ( Work Song - live at Sweet Basil , 1990). He made his last big appearance before his death in 1994 at the Floating Festival with his band consisting of Vincent Herring , Walter Booker and Jimmy Cobb .

His tone on the cornet is reminiscent of Clark Terry . Nat Adderley is remembered for his compositions Work Song , Jive Samba and One for Daddy-O .

His son is the arranger and pianist Nat Adderley junior (* 1955).
