Louis Sedell Hayes (* 31 May 1937 in Detroit / Michigan ) is an American jazz - drummer .

Life

Hayes began his professional career as a drummer from 1955 to 1956 with Yusef Lateef . He was then a member of the Horace Silver Quintet until 1959 , the Cannonball Adderley Quintet until 1965 and the Oscar Peterson Trio until 1967 . In addition, he played on the Blue Note , Prestige , Riverside and others as a sideman of musicians such as John Coltrane , Sonny Rollins , J. J. Johnson , Jackie McLean , Wes Montgomery , Cedar Walton , Dexter Gordon , Woody Shaw , George Benson , Freddie Hubbard , Joe Henderson and McCoy Tyner .

Since the 1970s he has led a number of his own groups, including a quintet with Junior Cook and Woody Shaw . In addition, his formations included musicians such as the saxophonist Abraham Burton , the trumpeter Riley Mullins , the pianist David Hazeltine and the double bass player Santi Debriano . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 273 recording sessions between 1956 and 2017.
