Abraham Augustus Burton (born March 17, 1971 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( alto and tenor saxophone ).

Live and act

Burton jammed with Eric McPherson and Nasheet Waits as a teenager . He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School before studying with Jackie McLean at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford . As a student he was part of the Collective Expression Band . In 2013, a scholarship enabled him to continue studying at Rutgers University , where he completed his master's degree.

In the early 1990s he was part of Nat Reeves' band ; Between 1991 and 1995 he was also a member of Art Taylors Wailers . In 1994, Burton founded his own quartet, which over time included drummer Eric McPherson, pianists Marc Cary , Allan Palmer , James Hurt and David Bryant and bassists Billy Johnson , Yosuke Inoue and Dezron Douglas . With this band he toured internationally, performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival , the Moers Festival , the Leverkusener Jazztagen and Pori Jazz and released several albums, initially Closest to the Sun ( Enja 1994). With Nasheet Waits and McPherson he also plays in the trio Etheral Breeze , in the duo Blacksalt he appears with Lucian Ban .

He also worked in the groups of Louis Hayes , Ali Jackson, Horace Tapscott , Kenny Barron , Cindy Blackman and Santi Debriano . Since 1998 he played with Mingus Dynasty . He is also part of the Mingus Big Band and was involved in their 2011 Grammy- winning album Live at the Jazz Standard as well as two previous albums that were nominated for a Grammy. Currently (2019) he leads his own quartet, which includes David Bryant , Dezron Douglas and Eric McPherson . Burton also teaches at the University of Hartford .
