Oskar Lagger (2018)

Oskar Lagger (born February 11, 1934 in Münster , Wallis ; † July 14, 2019 in Sion , Wallis ) was a Swiss composer and conductor .

biography

Oskar Lagger grew up in the canton capital Sion , where he also went to school and then attended the college Sion, which he completed in 1956 with the classical Matura (English and Latin). From 1956 to 1962 he studied in Paris. Oskar Lagger studied composition and singing at the École César Franck and graduated with a diploma in both subjects. He studied musicology at the Sorbonne , organ and Gregorian singing at the Institut de musique sacrée de l 'Université catholique, also in Paris. He then continued his vocal studies in Vienna , where he became familiar with twelve-tone music.

For the school year 1962/1963 he was appointed as a music and singing teacher at the German-speaking teachers' seminar in Sion. He also taught at the seminary and conservatory in Sion. Oskar Lagger continued his singing studies and took lessons from Jakob Stämpfli , Paul Lohmann , Laura Sarti and others

Oskar Lagger was the choirmaster at the cathedral in Sion for 30 years. From 1971 to 1996 he conducted the Pro Arte choir of the Sion Conservatory.

From 1982 to 1994 Oskar Lagger was director of the Sion Conservatory, where he campaigned for lower tuition fees, improved employment conditions for teaching staff and an increase in cantonal subsidies. During this time he was also a member of the jury at singers' and choir meetings and worked as an examiner at other conservatories.

Oskar Lagger was married to Cécile Lagger-Nussbaum and had five children.

Musical creation

Oskar Lagger's aim was to promote young talents, be it as a teacher at the teachers' seminar in Sion or as a teacher and later director at the Conservatory in Sion. Brigitte Balleys , mezzo-soprano, Brigitte Fournier , soprano and Norbert Carlen , baritone, enjoyed their musical training with Oskar Lagger. Since only men were taught at the teachers' college at the time, he wrote sentences for the four-part male choir for folk songs. Oskar Lagger gave the choir singing and school music in Upper Valais significant impulses through the vocal and musical training of the teachers at the teachers' seminar. As musical director, Oskar Lagger has performed numerous concerts as a choir director or soloist with the clubs he directs. He conducted the choir of the Sion Cathedral at services on Sundays and holidays and at funerals.

In 1971 Oskar Lagger founded the Pro Arte Sion choir , with which he developed a broad repertoire from baroque to contemporary choral music, including masses by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Joseph Haydn , Franz Schubert and Giacomo Puccini , cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach , the Requiem by Johannes Brahms and Gabriel Fauré , operettas by Jacques Offenbach and contemporary music by Calmel, Taillefer and Carl Orff . Oskar Lagger has performed with the choir at international choir competitions.

Oskar Lagger was a member and later President of the Music Commission of the Valais Choral Association (VWG).

Soloist career

Oskar Lagger was active as a singer at home and abroad. His solo activities as a bass took him to France, Germany, Italy, Poland and South Africa.
