Jakob Stämpfli (singer)

Jakob Stämpfli (born October 26, 1934 in Bern ; † September 28, 2014 in Thun ) was a Swiss singer ( bass ), teacher and director of the conservatory .

Career

He spent his early youth and the first years of school in Thun, went through the Progymnasium in Bern and the Bernese teacher training college in Hofwil . He received his first singing lessons from the opera singer Jakob Keller (1911–1992) in Bern. He completed his vocal studies from 1951 to 1953 at the Bern Conservatory and from 1953 to 1956 at the State University of Music in Frankfurt am Main . He also attended masterclasses for singing with Paul Lohmann and Franziska Martienssen from 1951 to 1953 . He passed the concert qualification examination in February 1956.

Activity as a singer

In 1954 he began working as an oratorio singer and appeared in first concerts in Germany, then also in the USA and Japan. In December 1955 he made his first recordings as a soloist in the Christmas Oratorio by J. S. Bach with the Thomanerchor Leipzig under Günther Ramin . He was soon considered one of the most important Bach interpreters of his generation. His repertoire included over 90 roles: oratorios, concerts and operas from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern periods. He sang in 94 locations from Amsterdam to Zurich and under conductors such as Ansermet , Boulez , Dutoit , Frühbeck de Burgos , Pritchard , Rilling , Swarowsky and others. Educational work

Jakob Stämpfli was a singing teacher at the Biel Conservatory from 1960 to 1962, at the Bern Conservatory for Music and Theater from 1963 and at the Saarbrücken Music Academy until 1969 . From 1969 to 1976 he was a professor at the Hamburg University of Music , from 1975 to 1992 at the Folkwang University of Music in Essen. From 1973 to 1992 he directed the music school in Thun and from 1992 to 1999 was director of the Conservatory for Music and Theater in Bern. He gave master classes in various countries and was a juror in numerous competitions. His singing students include Klaus Mertens (singer) , Cornelius Hauptmann and Dominik Wörner .

Music policy

Jakob Stämpfli was President of the Swiss Music Council from 1993 to 2002, also President of the APCS (Association des Professeurs de chant de Suisse) from 1988 to 1998, founding member and first President of the European Voice Teachers Association (EVTA), President of Johannes Brahms -Gesellschaft Schweiz and member of the main committee “ German Music Competition ” and the “ Concerts of Young Artists ” of the German Music Council .

Honors

In 1965 he was awarded the title of Professor ad personam "in recognition of his outstanding artistic merits" by the Saarland government. In 1989 he received the Culture Prize of the City of Thun and in 1995 the Grand Music Prize of the Canton of Bern.

Other musical activity

Stämpfli had his own recording studio and worked as a unit manager for numerous record and CD productions for various labels: Accord, Claves, Ex libris, Jecklin, ECM, Novali and others. v. won the eight “Grand Prix du Disque” as well as several prizes from the German record critics. He was a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the Association of German Tonmeister (VDT).
