life and work

Helmuth Rilling first studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart with Karl Ludwig Gerok , Hermann Keller and Hans Grischkat , and then from 1955 organ with Fernando Germani in Rome . On December 1, 1957, he became cantor at the rebuilt Memorial Church in Stuttgart-Nord and shortly thereafter also took on a teaching position at the Berlin church music school . Since 1963 church music director in Stuttgart, in 1969 he became professor for choral conducting at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . He held this professorship until 1985.

Originally an interpreter of Vorbach music and romantic and contemporary choral music, the sacred and secular work of Johann Sebastian Bach Rilling has been the focus of work since the 1970s . Between 1970 and 1985 he was the first conductor to record all of the sacred Bach cantatas on record. Since then he has been known in Stuttgart as "Mister Bach". Friedrich Hänssler , who had the courage to publish this production in his publishing house, received the Grand Prix du Disque for it in 1985 .

Rilling founded the Gächinger Kantorei in January 1954 and the Bach Collegium Stuttgart in 1965 , as well as the Oregon Bach Festival in 1970 and the International Bach Academy Stuttgart in 1981 , of which he was artistic director until his resignation in February 2012. From 1985 to 1996 he was artistic director of the State Youth Choir Baden-Württemberg. From 1969 to 1982 he also headed the Frankfurt Kantorei .

One of his specialties are the conversation concerts, in which he combines music analysis and concert. With thoughts on Bach in the early 1980s, a similarly stored sound carrier has also been released. He has been running the so-called Bach academies since the 1970s, which are concert festivals with lectures and master classes for singing and conducting. Such Bach academies take place regularly in Stuttgart and Oregon (USA), and since the 1980s also in Japan. Between 1986 and 2000 countless Bach academies took place in Eastern European countries, which helped him to receive an honorary doctorate from the Krakow Music Academy in 2003 and also made a contribution to international understanding.

In 1996 Helmuth Rilling recorded a completion of Franz Schubert's Oratorio Lazarus by the Russian composer Edison Denissow on CD. In 1985 he was able to complete the first complete recording of all Bach cantatas, followed in 2000 by the first complete recording of all works by Johann Sebastian Bach under Rilling's overall artistic direction on 172 CDs in the internationally awarded Edition Bachakademie .

In 1988 the Messa per Rossini was premiered under Helmuth Rilling and in 1995, under the patronage of the then Federal President Roman Herzog , the Requiem of the Reconciliation of 14 contemporary composers, as a gesture of reconciliation 50 years after the end of the war. Other premieres under Rilling line 1998 were the credo of Krzysztof Penderecki and 2004. The uncle of Boston or the two nephews , a youth opera by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy .

He has a special friendship with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , which he conducted in 1986 as the first German to conduct after the Holocaust and which played musicians who had survived Nazi persecution. From 1990 to 1996 he was the successor to Hans Pischner President of the New Bach Society .

Rilling is married to his wife Martina and has two daughters. He lives in Warmbronn , a district of Leonberg , where he was made an honorary citizen in 2019.
