Bach Collegium Stuttgart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bach-Collegium Stuttgart was an instrumental ensemble that was founded in 1965 by the church musician Helmuth Rilling and performed as the musical accompanist for the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart , founded by Rilling in 1954 . The two ensembles had been under the sponsorship of the Stuttgart International Bach Academy, also founded by Rilling, since 1981 .

Under Rilling's successor, Hans-Christoph Rademann , the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart was reformed and the Bach Collegium Stuttgart was replaced by a newly founded baroque orchestra. According to Rademann, the choir and the orchestra are a single ensemble that belongs together. Since 2016 they have been performing under the common name Gaechinger Cantorey .

activities

The Bach Collegium was not a professional ensemble, but came together on a project basis. The musicians in the ensemble had extensive experience, as they mostly worked as soloists in various top orchestras. The ensemble was primarily known for its formal knowledge and stylistic skills in the interpretation of baroque music .

The Bach Collegium worked together with the Stuttgart- based Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart . The joint projects consisted of concerts, including television productions, and recordings in particular of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach . The result was a complete recording of Bach's sacred cantatas and oratorios .

Both institutions went on national and international tours, for example to the Salzburg Festival, Festival Weeks in Vienna and Berlin, Bach festivals in London, Prague, Lucerne and Strasbourg. Pedagogical and scientific work consisted in the preparation of teaching programs for the International Bach Academy Stuttgart. Rilling held teaching positions in various Bach academies around the world.

  3. Note: The text is currently (accessed on December 5, 2019) partly still in the present tense, as if the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart still existed today, for example with “is since 1981” and “is today” (instead of “was "). The last paragraph makes it clear, however, that the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart has been replaced by a newly founded instrumental ensemble and the name "Bach-Collegium Stuttgart" has not been used since the 2016 Music Festival. Accordingly, under the menu item "Ensembles", the Bach Collegium Stuttgart is no longer listed as an ensemble of the International Bach Academy Stuttgart, instead only the Gaechinger Cantorey and the JSB Ensemble - both include a choir and an orchestra.
