Mathias Breitschaft

Mathias Breitschaft (born May 6, 1950 in Würzburg ) is a German church musician and university professor.

Career

Breitschaft began his musical career as a member of the Regensburger Domspatzen . After studying school music at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts with Helmuth Rilling and Kurt Hessenberg, he was in charge of the Limburg Cathedral Boys' Choir from 1973 to 1985 . In 1985 he was appointed cathedral music director and successor to Heinrich Hain (1934-2014), who retired in 1984, at Mainz Cathedral . In addition to leading the Mainz Cathedral Choir , he founded the St. Martin Cathedral Choir (1987) and the Girls' Choir at Mainz Cathedral (1995). He taught as a lecturer and professor for choral conducting at the Frankfurt University of Music; In 1994 he was appointed professor of choral conducting at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . His interpretations were documented in radio and television recordings. He has given concerts with his choirs in Europe, Israel, North and South America.

On March 22, 2012, the dean of the cathedral and prelate Heinz Heckwolf announced that Breitschaft was going to retire at the end of July 2012 and that Karsten Storck would become the new cathedral music director on August 1, 2012 at the High Cathedral in Mainz. Mathias Breitschaft u. a. active as voice trainer for the Kiedricher choirboys .

Honors

In 2001 Breitschaft was awarded the Peter Cornelius plaque from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Breitschaft received on May 6, 2010 the highest award of the General Cecilia Association for Germany , the Orlando di Lasso Medal. Since December 22nd, 2010 Mathias Breitschaft has been the holder of the Gutenberg badge of the state capital Mainz. On Sunday, September 15, 2019 Breitschaft was awarded the "Prize of the State Music Council for Services to Music Culture" by the State Music Council of Rhineland-Palatinate .
