history

Choir at the cathedral

Consisting of around 140 singers, the main task of the choir is to accompany and help organize the service . Progress is made in three rehearsals that are held each week in the modern choir at the cathedral, Nasengässchen.

Every year a small group of young singers is trained to participate in the musical work of the cathedral choir. After two weekly rehearsals in which basic knowledge is imparted, the introduction to the main choir takes place, in which the broad repertoire , partly consisting of works by Bach , Haydn , Mozart , Beethoven , Schubert and Bruckner , is learned.

In addition to concert tours to Italy , France , Belgium , Switzerland , Israel , Russia , the USA , Canada and Brazil , a number of CD recordings have been made that reflect the work of the cathedral choir.

In addition to musical activities, great importance is attached to social interaction . These include joint excursions to concerts, but also leisure activities offered by the Mainz Cathedral Choir.

The home of the choir is the Mainz Cathedral . At the beginning of the 1980s, an abuse scandal rocked the Mainz Cathedral Choir. Previous cases of sexual abuse have also been reported. The leadership, succeeding the pastor and cathedral music director Heinrich Hain (1934–2014), who retired in 1984 and supported by the musicologist and cathedral choirmaster Horst-Willi Groß as director of the choral school , was in the hands of cathedral music director Mathias Breitschaft from 1985 to 2012 .

Since August 2012 the previous cathedral cantor Karsten Storck has been the new Mainz cathedral music director.
