Mingus Big Band
Mingus Big Band is a big band founded in 1991 , committed to the work of the bassist, band leader and composer Charles Mingus (1922–1979).
Band history
In the first few years after Charles Mingus' death, former Mingus musicians such as Richard Williams , Jimmy Knepper , Sir Roland Hanna , Ricky Ford and younger Mingus admirers played in the Mingus Dynasty . They only played compositions by Mingus and went on tour with this repertoire. In 1988 considerable live recordings were made at the Parisian Theater Boulogne-Billancourt ; with eleven musicians one had reached the format of a small big band.
Sue Graham Mingus , the musician's widow, founded the large-format orchestra in 1991. The New York Fez under the Time Café gave her every two weeks the opportunity to appear in a big band that was supposed to present Mingus compositions. The ensemble's performances, led by Sam Burtis , had - in keeping with Mingus' musical conception - more of a jazz workshop character than the regular concert events.
Regular members of the Mingus Big Band are or were Randy Brecker , Ryan Kisor , Philip Harper , Art Baron , Frank Lacy , Ronnie Cuber , Alex Foster , James Carter , Michael Formanek , Marvin Smitty Smith , Lew Soloff , Jack Walrath , Chris Potter , John Stubblefield , Craig Handy , Kenny Drew Jr. , further Steve Turre , Steve Slagle , Milton Cardona , Eric Mingus , Bobby Watson , John Hicks , Earl Gardner, David Kikoski , Jaleel Shaw , Jeff Tain Watts and Lauren Sevian . The band also performed with Elvis Costello . European musicians like Didier Havet also played in the band on the European tours . In 2011, her album Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard was awarded a Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album .
In addition to Mingus Dynasty and Mingus Big Band , the Mingus Orchestra established itself as the third tribute band through its appearances in the New York jazz club Jazz Standard , for which bassist Boris Kozlov also acts as musical director. In 2011 Wayne Escoffery , Alex Foster , Frank Lacy , Kenny Rampton , Michael Rabinowitz , John Clark , Doug Yates , Costas Baltozanis , Boris Kozlov and Adam Cruz play in it .
In 2019 the Mingus Big Band belonged to Alex Foster (lead) and a. Jason Marshall , Steve Slagle , Philip Harper , Earl McIntyre and Marcos Varela .
