Lauren Sevian

Lauren Sevian (* 14. July 1979 ) is an American saxophonist of modern jazz . Her preferred instrument is the baritone saxophone .

Live and act

Sevian has performed publicly as a pianist since she was twelve. Then she switched to the saxophone. At the age of 17 she was already giving concerts at Carnegie Hall , Lincoln Center and the Village Vanguard . In 1997 she began her studies at the Manhattan School of Music , which she finished in 2003. Since that year she has been a member of the Mingus Big Band , with which she won the Grammy in 2011 for the album Live at Jazz Standard . She is married to saxophonist Mike DiRubbo . Lauren Sevian leads two bands of her own and toured with the Diva Jazz Orchestra in 2001 and with Jane Monheit and the Ladies of Jazz in 2012 . She appeared in a supporting role in Mona Lisa Smile in 2003 . She appeared in the documentary The Girls in the Band (2011) by Judy Chaikin and was the focus of the documentary But Can She Play? (2011) by Janice Roshalle Littlejohn. She also took part in recordings of Björkestra, Joan Osborne , Atilla Engin, Michael Veal and Lucy Woodward. She lives in New York City .

Prizes and awards

At the age of 16 she won the Count Basie Invitational competition . Since 2008 she has been nominated several times in a row as "Rising Star" among the baritone players in the Down Beat Critics Poll . Her album Blueprint stayed in the top 20 of the Jazzweek charts for several weeks and was also included in several annual best lists, for example on All About Jazz .
