Mike DiRubbo

Mike DiRubbo (born July 25, 1970 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is an American jazz musician ( alto saxophone , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Mike DiRubbo first played the clarinet before switching to the alto saxophone at the age of twelve, which he learned as an autodidact . While in high school, he had the opportunity to play in a concert by the Dwike Mitchell / Willie Ruff duo , which led him to become a jazz musician. From 1988 until his Bachelor's degree in 1992 he studied jazz at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford , where he was tutored by Jackie McLean , Hotep Galeta , Peter Woodard , Nat Reeves and Rick Rozie ; Antoine Roney , Abraham Burton and Winard and Philip Harper were his fellow students . He moved to New York City in 1997, where he has worked as a musician, band leader and music teacher ever since.

Rubbo played u. a. with Tony Reedus , Larry Willis , Eddie Henderson , Clarence Gatemouth Brown , Dwayne Burno , Peter Washington , Carl Allen , John Hicks and Cecil Payne . So far (2019) he has released seven albums under his own name. As a saxophonist, DiRubbo is stylistically influenced by Jackie McLean, Benny Carter , Johnny Hodges and Charlie Parker . In the field of jazz he was involved in 34 recording sessions between 1994 and 2017, including a. also with Jim Rotondi , Brian Charette , Mario Pavone , Joe Magnarelli and Tom Tallitsch . DiRubbo is married to saxophonist Lauren Sevian .
