Winard Harper

Winard Harper (* 1962 in Baltimore ) is an American jazz - drummer and bandleader of modern jazz .

Live and act

Harper worked for Dexter Gordon in 1982 and was a member of Betty Carter's backing band for four years . At the end of the 1980s, he and his brother, the trumpeter Philip Harper , founded the formation The Harper Brothers , which played in the hardbop tradition of the Jazz Messengers and recorded several albums for Verve . He also worked as a freelance musician in New Jersey and played on recordings by Ray Bryant , James Clay , Wycliffe Gordon , Etta Jones , Houston Person , Lafayette Harris and David Fathead Newman . Harper recorded several albums under his own name in the late 1990s, on which musicians such as George Cables , Reuben Brown , JD Allen and Cecil Brooks III participated. His role model is Art Blakey .
