Wycliffe Gordon (born May 29, 1967 in Waynesboro , Georgia) is an American trombonist , trumpeter , tuba player , singer and didgeridoo player of modern jazz .

Live and act

Wycliffe Gordon comes from a strictly religious family; his father was a church organist, which first influenced him with classical music. He made his first practical experience with church music and jazz brought him closer to the school system. His early role model was Louis Armstrong . At the beginning of his musical career he worked with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Jazz Orchestra , dealt with swing and experimented with new instruments. In his 1999 album The Search he played the didgeridoo , among other things , he also dealt with gospel music ( The Gospel Truth ) by using a "trombone choir" and the work of Thelonious Monk with an interpretation of his composition Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are . On What You Dealin 'With , which Richard Cook & Brian Morton call Gordon's best work to date in the Penguin Guide To Jazz , he played his versions of jazz standards by Duke Ellington ( Cotton Tail ), John Coltrane ( Mr. PC ), Dizzy Gillespie and others the hard bop classic Blue 'n' Boogie. Currently (2012) Gordon plays with his own band, consisting of Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet), Adrian Cunningham (clarinet / soprano saxophone) and Matt Munisteri (banjo / guitar).

Gordon has also worked on record productions by Cyrus Chestnut , Wynton Marsalis (on the albums Crescent City Christmas Card , 1989, Blood on the Fields , 1994 and Christmas Jazz Jam , 2009), Marcus Printup , Eric Reed, Randy Sandke , Joe Temperley and Rodney Whitaker With. In 2018, as in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016 , he was named best trombonist in the Down Beat critics poll .
